Beacon Gallery is pleased to take part in the ninth edition of SPRING/BREAK art show in New York City. Taking place for the first time in the former Madison Avenue offices of American fashion brand Ralph Lauren, this iteration of SPRING/BREAK (on view at 625 Madison Avenue March 3-9) addresses the theme of "“IN EXCESS" through the perspectives of 100 galleries and curators from across the United States.

Beacon Gallery will be presenting a solo exhibition by Boston-based artist Caron Tabb. The body of work shown in SPRING/BREAK directly speaks to questions of “Excess” in multiple ways, both in the themes addressed as well as the materials used.

The subject of Tabb’s work is her transition from her life in Israel to her life in America. In particular, she examines the struggle of leaving her country of origin and family as well as her deep sense of cultural heritage.

Tabb's works shown at SPRING/BREAK touch on both her personal struggle with her long-term expatriation to the United States as well as the universal challenges that immigrants face leaving their homeland and assimilating into a new culture. It examines the pain of what one leaves behind and the feelings surrounding the assumption of a new or hybrid identity.

Through Caron’s personal experience we are invited to explore what it means in this day and age to have multiple identities (as many do - not just those born outside the United States). Caron also touches upon the related themes of heritage, language, American notions of consumerism and of white privilege.

Through her work and by giving voice to the struggles of immigrants in this country, Tabb also acknowledges the role that immigrants have played in the building of the country. Often the “excess” accumulated is a direct result of immigrants who came to the US searching for a better life, sacrificing the notion of home, working in the shadows and behind the scenes to build the economy of excess.

Regarding the materials in Tabb’s work, everyday materials and recycled or upcycled materials often play a large part. From the bark of a tree, newspaper clippings, a vintage scale, to heirloom recipes, to used luggage tags, Tabb gives new meaning to the overwhelming amount of “stuff” with which many of us live, showing how meaningful certain objects can become when looked at through the lens of lived experience.
