The Mind of God
June 18, 2021 - August 22, 2021

Opening reception June 18th 6-8 pm

Beacon Gallery is pleased to present its upcoming solo exhibition of artist Fern Nesson, Mind of God, opening June 18th and running through August 22nd.

Mind of God brings together a collection of Nesson’s recent work which presents the artist’s exploration of the parallels between abstract photography and mathematics. The title is drawn from Johannes Kepler’s 1611 quotation, “Authentic mathematical forms exist in the mind of God and share his eternity.”

Capturing moments of transcendence, Nesson seeks not to “do” math but to elucidate its central ideas and to speculate about its origins and meaning. She describes her work: “In my images, I aim to complement the beauty of mathematical thought with non-representational images relating to the cosmos and our understanding and experience of it.”

Nesson’s work as a photographer and video artist showcase her quest to capture the moment when mass becomes energy. Her starkly contrasted images draw attention to the power of the infinite. At the intersection of science, spirituality, and art, Nesson’s work engages the viewer in a discussion of the greater hypotheses of time, energy, and reality. Her images seek to answer questions surrounding the notion of something greater. Nesson explains, “we know ourselves to be infinite, inextricably a part of the universe.”

Nesson believes that both photography and mathematics offer a path to deeper understanding of our place in the universe. Through photographs, long and short video installations as well as her written musings on mathematical concepts, the artist has created a show uniquely her own. Elegant and beautiful, Nesson’s work and ideas merit contemplation, all possible in her solo exhibition.

Join Nesson at Beacon Gallery for July and August’s First Fridays to enjoy her work in person or to learn more. For hours, appointments, and more information, please contact the gallery.
